The Rothko Chapel is a non-denominational spiritual place in Houston. It was commissioned in 1964 by the philanthropic couple John and Dominique de Ménil. They commissioned the artist Mark Rothko to design this unique project, which was to serve as a place of solitude and gathering.
The octagonal chapel features 14 impressive murals by Rothko and was designed by him in collaboration with architects Philip Johnson, Howard Barnstone and Eugene Aubry. Outside the chapel is the “Broken Obelisk” by Barnett Newman, which is situated above a water basin on the plaza.
NEWS: August 15, 2024 – Unfortunately, the Rothko Chapel will remain closed indefinitely due to restoration work following Hurricane Beryl.
