The Josef Albers Museum Quadrat in Bottrop is an institution dedicated to the presentation and memory of the artist Josef Albers. The museum’s collection was initially created from a donation by Albers on the occasion of his appointment as an honorary citizen of the city in 1970. After his death, the collection was expanded by a further generous donation from his widow Anni Albers. The museum was opened in 1976 and designed by city architect Bernhard Küppers.
Today, the museum houses the world’s largest public collection of Albers’ work, showcasing the full range of his artistic output – from early works and Bauhaus art to his famous “Homage to the Square” paintings. It also has an extensive collection of international art, which has been continuously expanded since its foundation.
