The exhibition “Six Large Drawings” presents a selection of important works by the renowned artist Richard Serra, who is best known for his monumental sculptures. The show focuses on his large-format drawings from various creative phases of his career from the early 1990s to 2011.
On display are two diptychs from the 1990s, which were inspired by Serra’s observations in Machu Picchu and emphasize the interplay of irregular shapes and masses. Also on display are two drawings from the series “Greenpoint Rounds” from 2009, in which Serra experiments with the depiction of intense, black circles. In addition, the exhibition is complemented by two multi-part rift drawings from 2011, in which thin vertical triangles traverse the paper where it remains empty.
Serra’s works are characterized by their profound material presence and their intensive exploration of form and space, which is particularly impressive in these large-format drawings.
