Nuria Maria: Granite Spring

Born in 1990 in The Netherlands, Nuria Maria’s work has evolved from figurative, cinematic scenes to more abstract compositions, aiming to capture the essence of a moment, a day, or a memory through color and the interaction of subjects, reflecting both natural laws and personal experiences.

Granite Spring marks her third solo show in Alzueta Gallery and the first exhibition of the new season in the Turó Park exhibition space. Focused on her deeply intuitive process, the artist is determined to convey a feeling or sentiment rather than just the visible aspects of painting.

Nature, time, memory, and love. In Granite Spring, these subjects move in a windy palette of compositions. These are themes that always seem to come back in my work as leading motifs.

The show builds further on previous exhibitions with a similar foundation; for example, Sol Sèc shown in Barcelona—a show based on a time spent in the Costa Brava, where nature so intensely captured me, as it also was a period of intense love and reflection.

Time, memory, and natural materials carry a certain mystery. Time and nature—are they capturing each other? Do they keep each other within themselves? How do we remember? How do we love? What does it take to have time? This show continues along the personal storyline. I simply cannot separate my work from what and where I live, and the capturing of summer’s nature continues through different countries and places that mean a lot to me.

It happens that the combination of this—time and nature—subject always fascinated me in a specific material that builds the ground for many of these places: Granite. Where Spring stands for love, freshness, and the unexpected. The history, the memory—and the new and young.

Granite Spring continues a body of work based on this line of the soil—the ground we find ourselves on, where time is captured and life is lived upon.
