Cindy Leong is an emerging artist from Aotearoa New Zealand whose artistic practice is informed by a deep engagement with Eastern philosophy.
In Leong’s abstract minimalist paintings, one can sense the influences of these philosophies in the form of serenity and mindfulness. Thousands of repetitive brushstrokes seem to “dance” across the canvas, creating an even texture that reveals its true complexity on closer inspection.
Painting becomes a meditative process for the artist, reminiscent of the working methods of the great masters of the Korean Dansaekhwa movement. This movement is characterized by its methodical painting, the use of neutral tones, and the repetitive painting process.
Cindy Leong sees her art practice as an expression of mindfulness and presence. She has thus found a way to leave her hectic life behind and reach a place of inner stillness. Her art has thus become a “visual representation of my meditation”.
Leong is a talented and emerging artist whose works radiate an impressive depth and meditative calm. Her work challenges the viewer to engage in slow and conscientious contemplation and thus find a meditative approach to one’s own perception and environment. I look forward to seeing more of her in the future.
