Frank Gerritz – Seraphic Light

The works of artist Frank Gerritz are characterized by a unique use of materials and high-precision surface treatment. The trained sculptor creates (wall) sculptures from clear geometric forms with graphite on MDF panels, with lacquer pencil on aluminum and produces (large-format) drawings. They are abstract, strictly conceptual works, which nonetheless take the human figure as their starting point and refer back to it.

From the outset, the artist has defined his parameters, which he derives from an average physique. Gerritz’s art is primarily concerned with centers and edges, lines and body surfaces, with the definition of volume and space. He plays virtuously with the opposing pairs of light and dark, of horizontal and vertical directions, of fleeing and centering forces.

He always adheres to a well thought-out geometric grid and to the square and rectangle. At first glance, his works may seem reminiscent of minimalism, but they are in fact the exact opposite. For all their precision, their quality is based on the sensuality of life.

Frank Gerritz was awarded the Edwin Scharff Prize Hamburg in 2010. His works have been shown in numerous international museum and gallery exhibitions since the late 1980s.
