Galería Cayón Madrid presents the third solo exhibition of the American sculptor Fred Sandback (1943-2003). The exhibition is spread over both rooms of the gallery in Madrid. Sandback, born in Bronxville, New York, completed his artistic training at the prestigious Yale School of Art and Architecture in New Haven, where he studied philosophy and sculpture. There he met important mentors such as Donald Judd and Robert Morris, who had a decisive influence on his artistic development.
For his works, Fred Sandback uses simple acrylic yarn lines to create intuitive and minimalist sculptures. Lines intersect in space, creating floating geometric surfaces and the illusion of solid but transparent surfaces and volumes. Sandback’s subtle method extends the traditional practices of sculpture and integrates architectural space, empty spaces and the viewer into his works.
At once ethereal and monumental, these works encourage the viewer to explore space and enter into a dialog with it. Another fundamental element in each of his installations, which vary depending on the location, is light. The shadows of the yarn lines draw new figures, bringing movement and dynamism to the work.
This exhibition was developed in close collaboration with the estate of Fred Sandback and offers visitors the opportunity to be inspired by the fascinating monumentality of his works.
