White Cube presents the first solo exhibition of Korean artist Lee Jin Woo in Hong Kong. Lee, who lives in Paris, is known for his deep connection to traditional Korean aesthetics. His works, which include paintings and works on hanji paper, are characterized by philosophical questions and aim to evoke a meditative state in the viewer.
Rooted in the Dansaekhwa movement, Lee’s art is characterized by a minimalist gesture and formal repetition. His artworks, which are made from charcoal and the traditional Korean paper hanji, are the result of a labor-intensive creative process in which layers of material are applied over each other over a period of months. The exhibition includes both paintings and works on paper, which explore themes such as concealment and the passage of time.
Born in Seoul in 1959, Lee studied at Sejong University and in France at the University of Paris VIII and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. He has been working with charcoal since the 1990s and lives and works in Paris.
