Isamu Noguchi: Selected Sculptures & Richard Serra: Hitchcock Series

Gemini G.E.L. presents a selection of sculptures by Isamu Noguchi alongside Richard Serra‘s Hitchcock series.

The sculptures by Isamu Noguchi, which were created at Gemini G.E.L. between 1982 and 1983, blending industrial materials with organic forms. They reflect a synthesis of nature and space and are an example of Noguchi’s ability to transform everyday materials into appealing works of art. The creation of these sculptures began with meticulous designs on graph paper, followed by models made of cardboard and foam. Finally, the forms were cut out of steel plate and treated in a galvanizing process that gives them their unique, textured surface.

The exhibition will also feature three oil paintings from Richard Serra’s Hitchcock series, which are reminiscent of his distinctive sculptures. Notably, the paintings are not produced using a printing press. Their velvety texture is achieved through two layers of the oil stick and silica mixture hand-applied to sheets of Japanese handmade paper.

The series, completed and signed before Serra’s death in March 2024, is being exhibited for the first time at Gemini G.E.L. The show represents the culmination of fifty years of collaboration between Richard Serra and Gemini. A curated selection of Serra’s earlier editions will also be on view.

Both artists have left their mark with their innovative approaches, and their captivating works can be seen until November 01 at Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles.
