In February, Galerie ETC presents a group-exhibition dedicated to the works of Max Wechsler (1925-2020) and Mathieu Bonardet (b. 1989).
The exhibition creates an engaging dialogue between two artists from different generations, who share a profound thematic and formal connection in their work. At the heart of the exhibition lies the theme of exhaustion – whether of material, gesture, or language – and the powerful expressiveness that emerges from it.
Max Wechsler’s works are deeply rooted in his exploration of text and language. His method includes layering, modifying, and reconfiguring materials like paper to create an abstract yet emotionally profound dimension. His works strive to make the unspeakable visible, often employing symbolic relationships with elements of language that dissolve their inherent meaning.
In dialogue with Wechsler, contemporary artist Mathieu Bonardet introduces a contemplative engagement with time, materiality, and the tension between order and chaos. His work explores themes such as geometry, balance, and the interplay between stability and collapse, achieving a cosmic and existential significance.
By juxtaposing Wechsler’s text-based compositions with Bonardet’s linear and geometric works, the exhibition reveals a quiet yet striking dynamic of contrast and resonance. Despite their differences, both artists are united in their relentless pursuit of transcending boundaries, be it those of the medium or those of understanding.
