The exhibition at Hauser & Wirth Gallery in Paris presents a series of new and historical works by Japanese artist Takesada Matsutani. Matsutani, who has lived and worked in Paris for six decades, is known for his unique approach to forms and materials. From the early 1960s to the 1970s, he was a member of the influential Gutai art group. During this time, he experimented a lot with vinyl glue and developed his unique language of form and material.
After the dissolution of the Gutai group, he further developed his style and integrated graphite into his works to create large-scale, monochrome surfaces. The exhibition shows both his current works, which were specially conceived for the exhibition space, and rarely shown works from his Gutai period.
