The Floating Top collection by Kobeomsuk Furniture is a tribute to the material wood and traditional carpentry. The minimalist designed collection exudes lightness, created by an optical illusion: gaps between the elements make the tops look as if they are floating above the rest. These deliberately incorporated shadow gaps and the recessed reinforcements, which are only visible from below, thus giving the collection its lightness.
At first glance, the Floating Top collection is characterized by simple, linear forms. It consists of a dining table, a chair, and a bench. They are made of sturdy white oak wood, the grain of which unmistakably corresponds to the natural origin of the material. However, if you look more closely, it becomes apparent that this simple design can only be made possible by skilled carpentry.
Beomsuk Ko, the founder of the South Korean furniture brand Kobeomsuk Furniture, handles the production himself, which allows him to incorporate issues such as how wood overcomes shrinkage and swelling directly into his designs. “The furniture is straight and simple, but we wanted to reveal the essence of handicraft by adding wood joint details to the structural connections. Sliding dovetails as well as mortise and tenon joints can be found on various parts of the furniture” he says about the collection. This spirit of traditional craftsmanship is reflected in every detail of the Floating Top collection.
The collection thus combines the best of both worlds: the minimalist, straightforward design, and the characteristic features of traditional craftsmanship. At the same time, every part is crafted with attention to detail. A play of structure and form that brings out the complexity in the seemingly simple.
