Mass Table by Ross Gardam

During Melbourne Design Week 2024, Studio Ross Gardam presented its latest limited edition, the Mass Table. The table is a combination of a minimalist design language and raw, natural elements. The development of the table led the studio on a contemplative journey exploring the fundamental equilibrium of form and mass.

The straightforward design and the smooth, flawless surface of the table form a stark contrast to the raw, seemingly uncut stone, which is precisely positioned at the base of the table. The stone thus ensures the static balance of the table, which appears to balance gracefully on its narrow pedestal base. This combination of artificial perfection and natural imperfection creates a unique visual tension that gives the table its extraordinary aesthetic.

Industrial forms of the Mass Table are first bead-blasted and then hand-waxed. This careful treatment softens the aluminum and at the same time enhances the tactile quality of the material. Each table has its own unique stone offcut, resulting in seven very distinct individual edition objects. In addition, each table features an individual edition number, the manufacturer’s mark and a numbered certificate of authenticity, personally signed by Gardam.

The Mass Table is a remarkable example of contemporary design. It transcends the boundaries between nature and industry, creating a harmonious balance between these two worlds. Once again, Ross Gardam and his team have succeeded in creating an object that challenges the norm with its unique design.
