The To-Tie table lamp collection, created by designer Guglielmo Poletti in collaboration with the company Flos, is special on both an aesthetic and functional level. Inspired by the English verb “to tie”, these lamps derive their name from their unique construction: Three simple elements, a cable, a rod, and a cylinder, are intertwined in such a way that they are held together only by mechanical tension. Any need for screws, glue or welding has been successfully eliminated. The design of the lamp is simple and reduced to its basic components.
The collaboration with Flos realizes Poletti’s personal research on the subject of structural tension in an industrial lamp. Each component of the To-Tie lamp has been designed with precise attention to the material from which it is made, contributing to the functionality of the lamp.
The borosilicate glass is hand-finished around the entire edge; the fabric electric cable forms a harmonious yet functional knot and is secured by specially designed cable holders; the anodized aluminum rod has a special knurling that is also found in the custom switch control.
The collection consists of three different lamps, each of which is ideally suited to its place of use – whether as a bedside table, console or living room lamp. In the process, their unique structure gives the lamps an independent presence in the room, regardless of whether they are switched on or off.
Because it is assembled without screws or glue, it is easy to disassemble. Whether for replacing components or for professional disposal in the recycling process, this makes the lamp particularly easy to handle and environmentally friendly. To-Tie is available in two finishes, black and aluminum gray.
The designer, who calls his work “self-explanatory design”, sketches the image of an emerging creative process, embedded in a deep connection of material and structure. The result is a simple but eye-catching design that combines the different functions of each part and stands out for its concise structure. His creative process translates into archetypal reconfigurations which revolve around the articulation of tensions and balances. Beyond their apparent simplicity, Poletti’s rigorous compositions stand as metaphors of solved complexities, referencing minimalist sensibilities through their architectural qualities.
Thanks to the inspiring collaboration with Flos and to the company’s unique know-how, my personal research on the theme of structural tension has been successfully translated for the first time into an industrial lighting.
